Body of Wisdom Workshop, Santa Cruz, July 27, Aug 1, 5

Zana Dance presents
Body of Wisdom Workshop

Body of Wisdom is a playful integration of Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement and Expressive Arts leading to discovery of inner gifts and undiscovered wisdom. These modalities give us heightened abilities to relate lovingly to each other and to ourselves.

When we ignore our soul’s desires, they can sabotage us by popping up unexpectedly. Find healthy ways to satisfy deep needs through dance and art. Spark your creativity and energize your whole self by integrating the desires of heart, mind and body.

Upcoming are three opportunities to experience Body of Wisdom play here in Santa Cruz, after which you have the option of joining an ongoing class:

Wednesday July 27th, 11am - 1:30 pm
Monday, August 1st, 1 - 3:30 pm
Friday, August 5th, 7 - 9:30 pm

These 2.5 hour workshops, normally $40, are available to you for $29 until the maximum enrollment.

Rhia Gowen combines her love of Contact Improv with 20 years performing and teaching Butoh, Japanese and Balinese dance. The teachers:

Daniel Bear Davis teaches skills to continuously broaden choice and dynamic range In the dance. He creates an environment of safety and permission. Daniel co-directed Shah and Blah Productions as well as performing acrobatic stilt theatre. Daniel has also performed on the boulders of Joshua Tree with The Body Cartography Project, on construction scaffolding with Wire Monkey Dance, and on a submarine, the walls of a boat, cargo deck chains, floating platforms, and on a suspended welded sphere with Copenhagen’s Live Art Installations (formerly Half Machine).

Matthew Shyka The Argot of Contact
How does a dance begin? How do we change the topic of this body conversation? How do we communicate pleasure, wariness, curiosity, agreement? Societal norms are out the window; cultural norms soften and expand. Bring pluck and candor to the possibility of complimentary and dissonant energies within a dance. Matthew Shyka has been making choreographed and spontaneous dances since 1997. He teaches Contact Improvisation in Santa Cruz and has been a guest instructor at Cabrillo College and Esalen Institute.

Elio Scudieri’s approach to teaching is a mixture of humor, edge pushing, spirited and inter- and intra-personal inquiry. He encourages a person’s dancing to take its shape through body-based listening and letting go. Coupling a martial arts background and a focus on meditation, Elio’s classes can be both very physical and quieting.

Daniel Mollner has been interpolating the formless form of contact Improvisation for 15 years and continues to enjoy facilitating the exploration of other interested movers. He finds lasting joy in liberating the dancer within all of us. Mr. Mollner's Exploratorium: Using objects, we explore sliding, rolling, transfer, push/pull, and redirection. Develop your ability to manipulate, articulate, and vibrate the enerphysic matrix for maximum expression and enjoyment.

Rhia Gowen draws on her extensive background in dance, art and healing. She has taught and performed Butoh, Japanese, Balinese, and Western dance-theatre for 20 years, and was awarded the Natori (Master) title in Japanese classical dance. Rhia’s visionary choreography fuses Eastern and Western multimedia dance-theatre, using mythical archetypes to illuminate the human experience. She has been dancing contact for over 15 years. As a certified Expressive Arts Counselor, Rhia integrates her love of dance to apply power of the movement for healing and personal transformation.

Breathing the Movement
· creating a dancing dialogue by using breathing, touch, movement, weight and balance.
· discovering ways to move our centers, moving alone or with a partner. How can we continue movement after losing touch from partner?
· where is movement coming from? where is it going to?
From Mirva: “I tell myself to breathe with all of my questions. In dance I am interested in the feeling of flow and soft movement. I love to investigate movement, its rhythm and different ways of inhabiting the body. A feeling of dancing is created by being able to switch the body from total relaxation to extreme intensity and tension. I call this the body’s ability to breathe and create movement. My ideal is total presence, which makes every moment true and meaningful.”

Mirva is visiting the US from Helsinki, where she performs, choreographs and teaches. She has taught at many international festivals, including Breitenbush, Earthdance, and Skiing on Skin, and is on faculty at the Kallio Performing Arts School in Finland. Dancing People is proud to host Mirva who, in addition to teaching CI, dances with Karttunen Kollektiv, Circo Aero and with Joona Halonen. Mirva is a 2011 Fulbright Scholar.
