Intermediate & Advanced Prerequisites
New or out-of-practice with Contact Improvisation?
Start with CIRF's Fundamentals level workshops and classes.
More experienced?
See below whether Intermediate or Advanced Level CIRF events will be best for your learning process.
CIRF Fundamentals classes provide the basic underpinnings of the Contact Improvisation dance form, to serve those who are returning from a year or more away from regular/weekly CI practice, those who want to revisit "beginners' mind" for refresher, warm-up, and study of teaching skills, and dancers/movers with less than 2 years experience with CI classes and weekly practice (regardless of participants' self-labeling as "Beginner" or not). CIRF offers a proportional amount of programing for each experience level--see Events Link for our full range of workshops and events.
All CIRF Intermediate and Advanced level classes and intensives require students to have a firm grasp of CI Fundamentals and a current regular/weekly CI practice (ongoing for at least 2 years). Fundamentals will not be reviewed in Intermediate and Advanced level classes. Advanced level events offer professional level training (regardless of participants' self-labeling as professional or recreational) and as such final admittance to Advanced Intensives and Classes is by onsite teacher assessment only. Please see each event's HOW MUCH link for dates/times of assessments. Participants unable to demonstrate the prerequisite skills in the first class exercise in Intermediate Intensives and Classes will be instructed to switch to the next available Fundamentals class. For classes designated Intermediate/Advanced, Intermediate prerequisites are required, but Advanced prerequisites are preferred. In the interests of injury prevention and quality learning, prerequisites are enforced at all CIRF events. For referral to upcoming classes and jams in your region that can help you assess your experience level,
please email: contact (at) ci-rf (dot) org or call: (phone).
CIRF Prerequisites for all events and Teacher-specific Prerequisites for Intensives are listed below. Teacher-Specific prerequisites are available in the Schedule Grid for each Event (just rollover and click on the name of the class to view). Prerequisites for Single Classes are also posted at the Registration Desk onsite at all Events.
